Duoquanshan Formation

Duoquanshan Fm

Period:
Ordovician

Age Interval:
Early-Middle Ordovician

Province:
Qinghai

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is at Oulongbulak southeast of Da Qaidam Dachaidan, Qinghai. The Duoquanshan Fm is derived from the Duoquanshan Limestone proposed by Mu Enzhi et al. in 1958. The Duoquanshan Limestone had previously been referred to the Arenigian carbonate rock developed in Oulongbuluke. Zhang Wentang (1962) renamed it the Duoquanshan Fm

Synonym: (多泉山组)

Lithology and Thickness

The formation is represented by a Lower part of thick-bedded limestone, and an Upper part of thin-bedded limestone intercalated with pebbly limestone, calcareous shale. In the type area, the Duoquanshan Fm is 950 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Limestone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It rests conformably on the dolomite intercalated with limestone at the top of the Oulongbuluke Gr of Upper Cambrian

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the black shale at the base of the Shihuigou Fm

Regional extent

The Duoquanshan Fm is exposed at Shihuigou in Wulan County, Qinghai (400 m thick), Datouyanggou south of Dakengdaban (195 m thick incompletely) and Oulongbulak Hill and its eastern part (800-1000 m thick).

Age

Tremadocian-Dapingian. [The underlying Oulongbuluke Gr of upper Cambrian is thought to extend into the earliest Ordovician according to its Cambrian Lexicon entry; therefore, base of the Duoquanshan Fm placed within the Tremadocian.]
